Los Angeles Staycation with Hotel Covell

One of the things we love most about living in Los Angeles is the fact that every area feels a bit different. It's so big and so spread out that it really feels like 5 cities in one, and every area has its own unique vibe.

Cort writing to you here, btw. Every year, Ty and I like to have a little getaway for our anniversary. Last year it was San Fran, the year before that Santa Barbara, and so on and so forth. But, this year, with all the travel we've had so far and all the travel we have scheduled in the upcoming months (we see you, Italy!), we decided to do a little staycation instead. Just a night away from home full of meandering around at our own pace. And Hotel Covell was the PERFECT place to have it!

We discovered this quaint boutique hotel a few months ago. Tucked away on one of the cutest streets in Los Feliz, it's charm drew us in immediately and we knew we wanted to stay here at some point!

The suite we stayed in had its own private entrance and the layout of the room really gave it an NYC loft kind of vibe (which if you know us, you know how much we love NYC, so we were in heaven). It was bright, airy, and had a great view. It was also located just over McConnell's ice cream, which happens to be our fave ice cream in L.A.

The hotel staff greeted us with a bottle of wine, and so much kindness as they showed us around the property! We couldn't get over the vintagey, urban feel of it all. It really did feel like we were WAY farther than 7 miles from home. ;)

Like I said, for this little "staycation", we really wanted to keep it as chill as possible. After we checked in to the hotel, we walked around and did some thrifting, came back and got ready to go out, went to a Tiki bar we'd never been to before (Tiki Ti and you all should go, like now), and then walked to ramen for dinner (Silverlake Ramen, and it's the best ramen in L.A., I swear).

The next morning, we had breakfast and coffee on the hotel's rooftop space, which is the CUTEST. And just kind of quiet and away from everything.

Sometimes 24 hours away can do you a world of good, and when you have places like this in your city, take advantage of them! We'll definitely be back!

Click here to book your stay and let em know we recommended ya! You won't regret it, promise!

Cafe Flora & Mansur Gavriel

Okay, I'm sure quite a few of you have seen photos of this glorious space floating around on Instagram/Pinterest/your dreams.

Us too. We saw a few shots of this space on Pinterest, not knowing at all what it was, if it was even in L.A., or if we were allowed in, but we knew we HAD to find it!

We found out through intense Instagram searching that this magical little tucked away gem was in fact in L.A. and not far from us! Aside from being design heaven, Mansur Gavriel is an Italian brand that specializes in handmade bags and shoes. And HOLY GORGEOUS! Also, it's a women-founded company! Woop woop!

Like we said, this beautiful space is tucked away on Melrose and you can ALMOST miss it, which makes it that much cooler. From two girls who worked in merch & retail for a long time, we were just in awe of the way they really maximized the space. Also, if this wasn't enough, attached to the shop is the most beautiful little cafe, called Cafe Flora, and we had some of the best avocado toast we've ever eaten (and we've eaten a LOT of avocado toast). Also, english scones with homemade hazelnut butter. Yes and yes.

love & scones,

Earl Grey Blackberry Cocktail

Warm weather, and thus, cocktail season is upon us, y'all. We pretty much go with wine throughout the winter months, but as soon as that spring sunshine hits, we're both like "where's the muddler?! Let's make some draaaanks!" It really is one of our favorite summer activities and some of our favorite posts to shoot for the blog. For the past two summers, whenever we would schedule a cocktail post, Jenna would also bring over her bathing suit to my house. We would make our recipe, shoot it, and then go out and drink our creations by the pool. And we're so excited that that season is almost back to us!

While we in no way consider ourselves Class A bartenders, we do enjoy trying to make new recipes and putting our own spin on them. Jenna has been suuuuper into juleps since our Paris trip, and so we decided to kind of make some version of a julep. We both know we love blackberry, so we started there, and then Pinterest gave us the idea to add earl grey tea to it. And I (Cort) don't even usually like bourbon, but HOLY WOW. This was so good!

  • Earl Grey Tea
  • Bourbon (Four Roses is one of Jenna's and my hubs' favorites)
  • Simple syrup
  • Lime/lime juice
  • Blackberries
  • A dash of vanilla extract
  • Club soda

  • Brew your tea, let it steep and cool for around 30-45 min. This cocktail does take some planning if you want it to be served refreshingly cold.
  • Muddle about 1/2-3/4 cup of blackberries with 1/2 oz shot of simple syrup
  • Add in 1 1/2 oz chilled earl grey tea
  • Add 1 1/2 oz bourbon
  • Toss in a bit of vanilla extract for some extra flavor
  • Squeeze in the juice of one lime
  • Strain mixture into a lowball glass!
  • Fill glass with club soda
  • Garnish with a lime, blackberries, rosemary, whatever ya like!

And that's it! Besides pre-planning to chill the tea, pretty quick and painless and super refreshing!

Anyone have any go-to summer cocktails worth sharing?!
